Volunteer scheme is the meal deal

A PILOT scheme is set to be launched in Chadderton to tackle isolation and loneliness.
Oldham Council believes the Meals at Home Plus project can open a door into engaging with vulnerable residents after NHS research revealed the biggest factor into early death is isolation.
As part of the initiative, householders will be provided with a hot lunchtime meal at home, as an additional choice from the frozen meal delivery service.
Paul Cassidy, director of adult services, announced the idea is more about users engaging with other people.
He said: “Isolation also affects mental and physical health, so this is about going back to old ideas and reinventing them.
“It’s not about going back to the van delivery service, as we don’t have the money to provide this.
“So we will be looking to recruit volunteers who can meet people and have a chat with them, which could eventually lead to a bit of hand-holding to assist the user through the door of engaging in activities.”
The Pavillion Cafe, in Chadderton Park, has already offered its services — which would reach out to 20 residents in the early stages, possibly expanding to 50, depending on the response.
Catherine Jackson, of Oldham Council’s independence and prevention services, urged volunteers to contact the council.
The cost of a hot meal, dessert and delivery is to come to £5.25 a day. Councillors have authorised £15,000 to the one-year scheme, pending further details.
