Bird’s eye view of huge upheaval

EPIC undertaking: a glimpse of the scale of the work needed to bring Metrolink to the town centre.
IT MAY not look pretty and it’s certainly caused disruption — but Metrolink in Oldham is taking shape, as this bird’s eye picture shows.
The extensive work is bringing the tram into the town centre by 2014. Union Street is a mass of cones and barriers as roadworks engulf what will become the tram line’s main route through Oldham town centre to a tram and bus transport interchange at a new Mumps Station.
Panoramic shots taken from St Patrick’s Church show a hive of activity at Manchester Street, the King Street area and Union Street.
The photgraphs also show the challenge faced by drivers as they encounter diversions, temporary lights and route changes as the works progress.
THE Manchester Street roundabout will be closed overnight this week for resurfacing works.
All exits of the roundabout will be closed from 8pm to 6am, from today until Saturday.
Metrolink has been carrying out extensive work to the roundabout as part of the town centre tram line.
Traffic diversions will be signposted and Metrolink is writing to near-by residents to inform them of the work.
A further series of evening closures will take place in January for approximately three weeks. More information will be available nearer the time.
