Delph’s Clara hits 100

FOR 95 of her 100 years Clara Shaw lived in the same house.

After moving into a hardware shop in Delph High Street as a little girl, Clara remained there living and working in the family building business. The remarkable resident celebrates her century milestone today.

As well as working in the family firm - Charles Shaw and Son - Clara, a pupil at Hulme Grammar, was an announcer at Manchester’s Piccadilly Station. She was pivotal in keeping the Delph Women’s Liberal Association going through the war and remained its secretary for 50 years.

Clara was also vice president of the Colne Valley Liberal Association, and was heavily involved with Saddleworth Museum and the area’s historical society.

Now living in Stoneswood Residential Home in Delph, Clara is marking her special birthday with her niece Muriel Downie and friends at a party.
