Police leaders sign pledges

Greater Manchester’s new Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd and Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy have signed a public contract pledging “independence and togetherness”.

The contract lays down ground rules for how they will work independently and together to protect community safety and build public confidence.

They also discussed the impact of the Leveson inquiry, which highlighted unacceptable practices in the Metropolitan Police and national media.

“I am today giving clear commitments about how I, as commissioner, will work with the chief constable towards making Greater Manchester Police the best force in the country,” said Mr Lloyd, who won last month’s vote for the newly-formed post.

Sir Peter Fahy said: “Policing can only be effective if it is accountable to the public for the money it spends and the considerable powers it holds over the lives of ordinary people. The public must believe that their police force is working for them.”
