£49,000 to safeguard museum future

THE future of the 50-year-old Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery has been given a boost with a Heritage Lottery Fund award of £49,000.

Curator of the Uppermill museum, Peter Fox, hopes the money - for a three-year education project -will allow the building to run for the foreseeable future.

Staff and volunteers will enhance the museum’s work for schools and local people and will pay for refurbishment of the old mill section, new storage areas, digitalisation of collections, the redesign of the gallery area and full disabled access.

The museum hopes to apply for a full heritage grant in the future.

Peter said: “We are absolutely delighted by this support. Throughout the years the community resource has been supported and used by local people as well as many visitors from further afield. This project will help us to ensure the museum’s future for the next 50 years.”
