Tributes to former Hulme deputy head

Tributes have been paid to former Hulme Grammar deputy head teacher Cyril Ashton, who has died aged 92.
Shaw-based Mr Ashton, the school’s vice-master from 1967-1980, died on January 4 following heart problems.
Mr Ashton, a keen sportsman from an early age, began his long association with Hulme when he entered the prep school aged eight .
He won a foundation scholarship to the main school and later a scholarship to St John’s College, Cambridge. He returned to Hulme as a junior French master and became head of the department in 1954.
Former colleague Bernard Counsell said: “Hundreds of men have been inspired by him and will be very sad to hear of his death.”
His wife Joyce - whom he married in 1980 following the death of his first wife Joan - said; “He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.”
Mr Ashton leaves sons Geoff, Robert and Paul, and daughter-in-law Vicky.
The funeral is at Oldham Crematorium tomorrow (1pm). Donations to Francis House Children’s Hospice in lieu of flowers.
