COUNCIL chiefs are to consider plans to refurbish Oldham War Memorial and repair the Book of Remembrance.
If the proposals are approved tonight, the site will become the latest to benefit from Oldham Council’s commitment to ensuring the sacrifices made by past generations are not forgotten.
The Grade II Listed Oldham War Memorial is a structure of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. On completion of the proposed work it could be upgraded to Grade II listed status.
The memorial is in need of extensive refurbishment work, including the repair and conservation of the Book of Remembrance.
Works will include repairs to the granite plinth, bronze doors, sculpture and brass plaques; conservation and digitisation of the Book of Remembrance, and its temporary relocation to Gallery Oldham during the works.
The plan has been prepared in partnership with the Oldham British Legion. The council has been able win £30,000 from the War Memorials Trust to help pay for the repairs.
Council leader Jim McMahon said: “Oldham War Memorial is extremely important to residents, which is why this refurbishment is needed. The proposed work will bring the memorial back to looking its best.”
