LOCAL secondary schools will get £304,000 to help year seven pupils catch up in English and maths.

Oldham will receive £500 for every pupil who didn’t reach the expected level in either or both subjects when they left primary school.

£54.5 million is being handed to schools across England to provide intensive tuition for almost 110,000 children. The schools will have freedom to decide how best to use the money.

The extra support is designed to help bring pupils up to speed quickly so they are more likely to succeed at secondary school, rather than falling further behind.

It also aims to improve motivation and prevent disruptive behaviour that impedes learning for others.

Payments to local authorities will be made today, and to academies and free schools tomorrow.
