ON THE MOVE: workmen load the statue
A STATUE given to the people of Shaw almost a century ago will take pride of place in the Memorial Gardens.
The Education Statue, which was bought by local businessman and councillor James Cockcroft in 1919, has been removed from the grounds of Shaw’s St James’s Church.
The bronze sculpture of a mother and child will be restored and relocated as part of a council commitment to refurbish all memorial gardens.
The Shaw gardens will close for a month from Monday, February 18, while the work is finished.
A new stone plinth for the statue is being installed, which will take pride of place in the gardens. There will also be repaired pathways, benches and flower beds.
