Latics heroics have everyone buzzing

LATICS’ amazing FA Cup run is putting the town on the map.

Victories over Nottingham Forest and Liverpool and a dramatic draw with Everton have set internet and social media channel ablaze.

And caretaker manager Tony Philliskirk says the reflected glory from Athletic’s unfolding FA Cup story is even seeping into the club’s grass roots.

There was no wild celebration for the players following the 2-2 Everton draw - instead they settled down to focus on Tuesday’s league match against Stevenage — which they won, to raise themselves out of the league relagation zone.

“I’ve had lots of texts and phone calls from managers, former managers and people in the game,” said Philliskirk. “So many people are talking about us because it was such a dramatic day.

“I was out on Sunday morning looking at the under-10s, under-12s and under-14s games at Radclyffe School with (centre of excellence manager) Mick Priest.

“Chatting to the parents and coaches there, there is a feelgood factor around at the moment and that is great for the club and the town.”

Philliskirk admitted he didn’t realise until later how special the atmosphere was inside Boundary Park on Saturday after Smith’s goal.

“When I got home, my wife Lesley said ‘look at this on YouTube’.

“Someone had filmed it in the Chaddy End. I watched it and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck.”
