Sian’s head shave set for take-off

A ROYTON receptionist is to have her long locks chopped off to boost the coffers of charities close to her heart.

Sian Welsh (23), who works at The Co-operative Academy in Blackley, is taking part in Runway on the Runway, a fashion show which aims to raise money for three charities — Make A Wish, Teenage Cancer Trust and Medcare.

The show includes catwalk routines created by students from nine Greater Manchester schools, beauty brand Benefit providing make-up skills, Kurt Geiger’s shoes as well as support from a Manchester model agency.

But as well as helping out at the event, Sian has decided to make another dramatic contribution — shaving her head.

“I was thinking about shaving my head 12 months ago when my sister Carly was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said.

“Seeing someone you know and love go through cancer is difficult as you’d do anything to take it away, but you’re helpless to do anything.

“When the academy was given the opportunity to be involved with Runway on the Runway I jumped at the chance to help with fundraising.

“Shaving my head is my way of giving something back and raising awareness of the three brilliant charities and what they do. I’m really proud to be involved.”

The event takes place at Manchester Airport’s Concorde Conference Centre on March 21.

Sian plans to shave her head a few days before the event and will appear on the night in a wig.

Pupils have also come up with other fundraising ideas, including seeing vice-principal Gillian Houghton bathing in baked beans.
