AN old folks’ group which has been running for almost 50 years is preparing for the end of an era after the committee revealed it would no longer be able to hold an annual party for the over-70s.
Failsworth Old People’s Welfare Association has been organising the Easter event for 48 years.
However, with dwindling membership and no suitable venue available, the committee has reluctantly decided it can no longer continue the tradition.
Edith Riordan, committee secretary of 40 years, said: “It’s a real shame we have had to stop the party.
“It was so popular — everyone had such a good time and we always had people on waiting lists for tickets.”
After the closure of the old Failsworth Community Centre two years ago, the group has struggled to find a ground-floor venue big enough to hold 150 guests plus volunteers and committee members.
During the parties there was afternoon tea, raffle and a variety of entertainment.
