Spy cameras at double to fight crime
Date published: 22 March 2013
POLICE want to install three number plate cameras around Saddleworth and Lees to clamp down on vehicle crime.
The cameras take pictures of vehicle number plates and automatically check registrations against a database that reveals whether the number is right or wrong for that car, and if the car is taxed and insured.
The system could help police to track down criminals passing through the area and help to capture persistent fly-tippers. There are 400 cameras around Greater Manchester operating 24 hours a day. information captured by them is stored for two years.
The local district partnership will discuss whether it can afford to install the cameras — which cost £25,000 each – and where they might be positioned.
