There’s naan older than the Dil-Khush
Date published: 26 March 2013
NOT only have Chronicle readers risen to the spicy challenge to unearth Oldham’s first Indian restaurant they’ve also delivered on the first takeaway!
After Greenfield author Ed Stacey put out the call on Friday to help him with research for a new book “Cotton, Curry and Commerce” dozens of people called and emailed him.
The overwhelming response confirmed the Dil-Khush, in Manchester Street, as the borough’s first curry house.
But it’s also come to light that a pregnant woman’s cravings may well have signalled the birth of the first takeaway curry!
“I received so many fascinating memories I will have to include a special section on the Dil–Khush in the book,” said Ed.
“One husband travelled from Failsworth to fetch a curry to satisfy the cravings of his pregnant wife, and brought it back in a metal dish given to him by the restaurant — perhaps the first takeaway curry in Oldham? From the age of his son we can date that safely as 1961/2.”
