Giant snow wall to stop ‘risk it’ drivers
Date published: 26 March 2013
A MASSIVE 12-foot high wall of snow has been built to stop thoughtless drivers causing problems on a weather-ravaged moorland road.
Oldham Council’s highway chief took the decision after colleagues in Kirklees, Huddersfield, say they will not open their side of the A635 Greenfield-Holmfirth road until the end of the week.
Warning signs and barriers will remain in place above Greenfield and Oldham Council’s snow teams built a snow wall at the Kirklees boundary to ensure drivers do not attempt to use the pass.
Craig Dale, Oldham’s head of highways, said: “This is a very hazardous stretch of road and we have had to take these precautions to stop drivers putting themselves and rescue teams at risk.
“As it is, we had to pull two drivers out of drifts while my team was working to finish the snow wall. They just completely ignored the snow warning signs and barriers and drove straight on. These are very foolhardy actions and can have really serious consequences.”
