Life for woman who stabbed uncle

A 29-YEAR-OLD woman was sentenced to life in prison yesterday after being found guilty of killing her uncle in an evening drinking session last November.

Bernadette Watt of Vincent Avenue, Sholver, was convicted of murder at Manchester Crown Court and ordered to serve a minimum of 22 years.

It was claimed in court that Watt killed her uncle because he had admitted sleeping with her late sister Michelle 12 years earlier, when she was 16. Watt allegedly told police: “he deserved it”.

Police were called to Coleridge Road after midnight on November 19 when the ambulance service reported a 48-year-old man had been stabbed.

Officers found Peter Watt on the floor being cradled by his brother Michael after being stabbed in the heart. He was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Peter had spent the day drinking with several people including his niece. An argument had broken out before midnight. When the group called for help a call handler heard a voice in the background shouting: “He’s dead, he’s dead. I’ve killed him, I’ve killed him, he’s dead.”

Senior Investigator Andrew Tattersall said: “There are clearly no winners in this tragic case.

“Only she knows why she did what she did, and it is clear that she will have to live with that for the rest of her life.”
