Life should mean life for cop killers, says Home Secretary
Date published: 17 May 2013
POLICE killers will spend the rest of their life in jail under proposals to be unveiled by Home Secretary Theresa May.
The current minimum jail term for a convicted police-killer is 30 years. The proposals will be announced in an address to the Police Federation conference in Bournemouth.
There have been 12 killings of police officers on duty since 2000 - including the murders of Diggle-born PC Nicola Hughe and colleague Fiona Bone by Dale Cregan, last year.
Mrs May will tell the conference: “To kill a police officer is to attack the fundamental basis of our society. We ask them to take risks so that we don’t have to. That is why I am clear life should mean life for anyone convicted of killing a police officer.”
