Attacker’s plea rejected by court

A WOMAN sobbed and begged magistrates not to jail her for attacking a pregnant former love rival.

But Clare Vandermark (39) of Miriam Street, Failsworth, was given a four-month sentence after being convicted of a racially aggravated assault on Naomi Sampson a year ago.

After shopping in Harpurhey, the victim - 10 weeks pregnant - was getting into her car when Vandermark approached her, shouting obscenities. She tried to lock the door but was punched in the face. Vandermark made a racist remark and continued lashing out even after the victim told her she was pregnant.

Before leaving she said “Next time I am going to set you on fire.”

The women knew each other and at different times had been in a relationship with the same man, who had since died.

Vandermark pleaded not guilty at Manchester City Magustrates’ Court claiming she hadn’t been there.

Barry Cuttle, defending, said Vandermark had never previously been in trouble for violence and maintains her innocence.

Vandermark said she would appeal. She was refused bail.
