Councillor Brian Lord hands over the ceremonial chains to the new Saddleworth Parish Council chairman, Councillor Graham Sheldon
Councillor Graham Sheldon is the new chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council, taking over from Councillor Brian Lord.
Mr Sheldon, who runs the post office in Uppermill high street, said: “We just want to promote Saddleworth wherever we can. It should be a great year; daunting, but I’m going to enjoy it.”
Mr Sheldon plans a Saddleworth calendar and other fund-raising events during his year in office.
Two main beneficiaries of the fund will be Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton and the St Mary’s Stillborn and Placenta Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester.
The fund will also give smaller amounts to local charities and clubs.
During Councillor Lord’s year of office the parish chairman raised more than £15,000 for his nominated charities: the Royal Oldham Hospital League of Friends, the Oldham Diabetic Volunteers Group and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Councillor Lord said: “It’s something we’re very proud of. I have been able to put on the chains 150 times over the last year and have attended some splendid events. Visiting the local schools to hand out the Queen’s Jubilee Coins was definitely a highlight, because we got such a great reception from every school.
