Conservative stalwart takes on Mayoral role

THE Mayoral chains were being passed to Councillor John Hudson during the Mayor-making ceremony at Oldham Civic Centre today.
The long-serving Conservative councillor takes over the role from Councillor Olwen Chadderton and will represent the borough at community engagements and events around the borough over the course of the next year.
Councillor Hudson, who represents Saddleworth South ward on Oldham Council, will also meet with volunteers, children and other organisations while carrying out his traditional mayoral duties.
The new deputy mayor will be Labour councillor Fida Hussain, who represents Werneth.
As one of her last official acts, Mayor Olwen Chadderton distributed the procees from her Mayor’s Appeal fund to local charities yesterday.
Almost £33,000 was awarded to good causes: Oldham Liaison of Ex-Servcemen Welfare Fund, which aids ex-servicemen and women, received £12,000; £9,000 each went to the Alzheimer’s Society and Oldham Young Carers, while Dr Kershaw’s Hospice received £1,000.
Macmillan Cancer Support was awarded £625, the Multiple System Atrophy Trust received £500 and the outgoing Mayor also sponsored two children, affected by the fall-out from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, to visit Oldham, costing £800.
