Noteworthy performance

BRIGHOUSE and Rastrick are the 2013 Oldham and Saddleworth Band Contests champions.

They took advantage of the absence of last year’s winners Black Dyke to take first place in five of the eight competitions they entered.

Marsden were crowned best local band and Tewit won the youth section.

A total of 126 bands played at this year’s Whit Friday concerts, travelling from as far as Denmark, Switzerland and Norway.

There were a dozen contests and Delph topped the list for attracting most bands, with 80. Denshaw and Greenacres attracted record numbers of bands, 60 and 49 respectively.

This year’s musicians included “Blue Peter” presenter Barney Harwood, who was challenged to learn the trombone in four weeks. See how he got on tomorrow on CBBC (6pm).

*LYDGATE issued a statement after changing its initial results. The addition of a runner-up prize in each section two years gave a situation in which the best band in each section could win less money than the band that came second. The rule has been changed to avoid this
