A ROYTON company is in the running for a heritage award after helping to restore an engine house thought to be the oldest of its kind in the world.
Building conservation and preservation specialists Maysand of Salmon Fields Business Village, were the principal contractors in the restoration at the former Ecton Hill copper mines in Staffordshire.
The project has now been entered for an English Heritage award.
The company’s craftsmen did essential repairs to the building, thought to be the oldest mine-winding engine house in the world, built in 1788.
All the work was carried out in a way designed to replicate original work: “That was the difficult part of the job,” said Maysand MD Bryn Lisle, “to make it look like nothing had happened.
The restored engine house is to be used for educational work at the historic site.
