Driven round the bend by new road layout

CLOSE call . . . these two cars almost collide as they attempt to join the lanes to approach the bypass
A NEW road layout at the Manchester Street roundabout is driving Oldham motorists around the bend.
Drivers constantly switch lanes and pass in front of fast-moving traffic, leading to a string of near misses.
Chronicle reader David Wright said several of his family and friends have come close to crashing because of the confusion.
He said: “As you come up Middleton Road and approach the roundabout you can get into three different lanes. People who are trying to get on to the bypass are getting into the wrong lanes — because they all just merge together and the road markings are so confusing.”
A TfGM spokesman said: “We, Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police have reviewed the new layout. The road markings on the approach indicate which lane heads in which direction, but we appreciate the changes will involve a period of adjustment.
“That said, we will continue to monitor its use and review whether any further measures are required.”
