Fresh fields launch
Date published: 18 June 2013
MAJOR works to improve Churchill playing fields — the largest in Saddleworth — are nearing completion.
The site has long suffered from poor drainage and flooding. A new layout was also needed to increase the flexibility of the facilities and boost bookings.
Plans approved by Oldham Council in October, 2011, were backed by £60,000 from the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership budget, plus funding from the Football Foundation (£180,000), Rugby Football League (£50,000) and a range of local sporting organisations.
Work began in February 2012 but progresswas delayed by poor weather.
Complex drainage works are now almost complete and the top two pitches at the Uppermill end of the site are seeded and making good progress.
The hard-surface works — a sprint track and “grasscrete” area to help with parking at tournaments and events — will be completed soon. It is expected work will be completed by late July, in advance of a special relaunch in September
