Change of direction for drinks supremo
Date published: 18 June 2013
AS Royton-born born Diageo chief executive Paul Walsh toasts the end of his phenomenal career in the drinks industry, he is believed to be heading for the other side of the consumption business — food.
Mr Walsh (57) is expected to become chairman of catering business Compass Group following his departure from the £43 billion multinational drinks giant.
The former Royton and Crompton School pupil spent 13 years in charge at Diageo, steering iconic brands such as Guinness, Smirnoff and Gordon’s Gin. Compass, whose clients include Wimbledon, oil rigs and schools, is planning a similar focus on emerging world markets as pioneered by Mr Walsh at Diageo.
He is expected to succeed current chairman Roy Gardener in February.
Announcing his retirement from the drinks giant he said: “It has been a privilege to lead this great company. Diageo is one of the world’s leading businesses — a position it has earned through the efforts of every one of its talented people.”
