THE former head of Royton and Crompton School has taken charge of a struggling academy in Cumbria.

Desmond Herlihy, headmaster of Royton and Crompton for 16 years, led the school to national recognition before leaving this Easter.

Mr Herlihy has been appointed interim head teacher at Furness Academy in Barrow following suspension of the school’s principal.

The academy’s chairman of governors, Ted Creighton, said Mr Herlihy’s background made him perfect for the school’s needs: “Royton and Crompton school underwent a huge transformation under his leadership.” and has consistently maintained results above the national average. Its Ofsted rating, which has been sustained since 2008, indicates that it is good in all aspects, including leadership.”
