Equality UK? That’s rich - Meacher
Date published: 21 June 2013
OLDHAM West and Royton MP Michael Meacher has accused the Government of allowing the rich to become richer and punishing ordinary people.
The Labour MP said Prime Minister David Cameron’s well known claim, “We’re all in it together” was simply not true - and Oldhamers and their families paying the price.
Speaking in Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Meacher said: “According to the Sunday Times, 1,000 of our richest citizens have increased their wealth since the financial crash by £190m billion. Everyone else on average has been forced to take a six per cent real-terms cut in incomes. Isn’t his policy of enriching perpetrators and punishing victims the very opposite of one-nation Britain?”
Mr Cameron said the richest people were paying a higher rate of tax; Mr Meacher responded that many of those who caused the crisis were benefiting while his constituents were suffering.
