CROMPTON Cricket Club was today coming to terms with a future without its leading light.
Club chairman Stewart Howarth died on Wednesday night when his car ploughed into a cemetery wall, following what is believed to be his collapse ot the wheel.
Tributes have continued to flood into the devastated club.
Treasurer Glenn Dawson said: “Stewart will be very sadly missed. He was married to the cricket club. He was there all the time. The club facilities have improved a lot and that’s down to him.”
Mr Dawson said Mr Howarth shunned the limelight: “He didn’t want praise and just got on with it. We are all deeply shocked.”
Mr Howarth was on his way to the club for an under-11s game when the accident happened.
Officials waiting for him to arrive cancelled the game after hearing the tragic news.
Police have reiterated an appeal for witnesses to contact them on 0161-856 4742.
