Killer Brady to speak at tribunal
Date published: 24 June 2013
Moors Murderer Ian Brady is to speak publicly for the first time since he was jailed for life in 1966, as he bids to leave a mental hospital on Merseyside.
The child– killer will give evidence in person to a tribunal at maximum security Ashworth Hospital, Merseyside. Brady believes he is not mentally ill and wants to be transferred to a prison.
The 75 year old, who has been on hunger strike since 1999, believes he will be able to starve himself to death in a jail.
Brady was given life in May 1966. He was moved from prison to Ashworth in 1985 as his mental health deteriorated. Brady’s legal team has called its own expert, who said Brady isn’t mentally ill and could be treated in prison.
But experts called by Ashworth say Brady is still chronically mentally ill and should stay in hospital.
The tribunal has heard that, as the “the best– known paedophile in this country”, he would be a target for other prisoners if he was transferred to a jail.
