New chapter opens in reading initiative
Date published: 02 July 2013
THE borough has launched a novel way to turn children into book worms this summer.
The Brilliant Books campaign has got under way at Oldham library, starting a new chapter for youngsters who have yet to discover the joys of reading.
Oldham Council’s library service has teamed up with Stockport to pen a programme of author and illustrator visits, book-themed activities and reading forums to fuel a love of reading among the younger generation.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for co-operatives and neighbourhoods, said: “We all like a good read, whether it is a newspaper, book or ebook but Brilliant Books is much more than that.
“This initiative builds on our love of books and last year it got young people from across the borough talking and sharing ideas.
“We want to build on that success and showcase our libraries and the many key services they provide to residents of all ages.
“It is vital we promote a love of reading from an early age. Not only does it support the development of pupils throughout their school years but it also helps you get along in life and with your chosen career.”
Twenty primary and secondary schools took part when the scheme was piloted in the borough last year including Friezland Primary.
