SILVER surfers will be celebrating graduating from a computer course on Monday.

Developed by Oldham’s Friends and Neighbours team, the web literacy course aims to counteract rising levels of digital exclusion among the elderly and it has now grown to 40 members.

Starting with basic skills such as how to use a mouse, the course develops to how to search online, send an email and watch videos online.

One of the oldest graduates, 88-year-old Jimmy Barker said: “It has helped me immensely. The tutors are so patient with us and they help whenever we need it.”

Jimmy, who served in the armed forces for 34 years, has now bought a laptop for himself and regularly uses it to watch videos and even play the odd game of online poker.

“I am really looking forward to coming back to the classes in September to learn more skills.” he added

“I have family and friends in Europe and it will be fantastic if I can use Skype and email to keep in contact.”

Jimmy, who lost his wife Betty 18 years ago, says that he suffered from loneliness and the best part of the course has been getting out and meeting new people.

The Failsworth resident said: “The course is like a social event and it gives you something to do and you meet some fantastic people.”

Tutor Mohammadreza Shamsi said that the course has been designed to go at a pace where everyone is comfortable with nobody ever left behind.

Monday’s graduation celebration will take place at the civic centre.
