MANCHESTER United’s oldest former player has died aged 91.
Chaddertonian Jack Crompton made his goalkeeping debut in 1946 and helped the Reds to FA Cup victory against Blackpool in 1948 and the league title four years later.
After the Munich air disaster in 1958, Jack became a coach at Old Trafford and played a part in United’s 1968 European Cup win.
When he left the Theatre of Dreams, Jack worked at Barrow, Bury and Preston before coaching United’s reserves and becoming president at non-league Curzon Ashton.
In May, 1981, he had a short spell as caretaker manager at United between the dismissal of Dave Sexton and the appointment of Ron Atkinson.
The proud grandad released his autobiography “From Goalline to Touchline” at the tender age of 86. The initial print run of 2,000 copies sold out immediately.
Jack was photographed at Kingfisher School in Chadderton by the Chronicle three weeks ago when he welcomed a Royal visit from Sophie, Countess of Wessex, to celebrate the completion of a £2.5 million refurbishment and extension.
Last year, former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson unveiled the Jack Crompton suite at the school to mark Jack’s staunch support for the Foxdenton Lane school over the years.
Kingfisher head teacher Anne Redmond said: “Jack was a true gentleman and friend of Kingfisher. Jack and his wife Sheila have been wonderful supporters of Kingfisher for many years.
Friend
“The school has lost a great friend in Jack, an ambassador for children with special needs who worked tirelessly to improve their opportunities in life. Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife Sheila and their family.”
