Metro work is making tracks

Engineers will be upgrading systems and tracks on the existing Metrolink network in the next few weeks as part of a £1.4 billion expansion programme.
The work will bring improvements in tram management, information systems and the transformation of the Manchester Victoria hub — but there could be some disruption while the work goes ahead. Passengers are being advised to check their services before travelling at weekends, when the work will be taking place. Some services will be replaced by buses.
Councillor Andrew Fender, chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “Metrolink is to treble in size by 2016. We need to upgrade the existing signalling system.
“Regular passengers will know that services are already starting to experience congestion and the work being done over coming weekends is an essential part of addressing that.”
