Charity total rising as teacher takes on latest climb

Children at St Joseph’s School in Shaw returned to their fund-raising best to match the efforts of their daredevil teacher Steve Hill.

Every year teacher Steve undertakes an action challenge - and the youngsters raise money to add to his charity fund.

This month he will head to the tropical rainforests of Borneo for a trek culminating in a climb up the 6,000m Mount Kinabulu.

The youngsters have started their campaign with a cake sale, car wash and film night – raising £1,500 since May in the process. They also did a 6,000m fancy dress sponsored run, matching on the ground the height Steve will climb

The year six pupils are supporting a variety of causes including Cancer Research UK, fellow pupil Shane Keating, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the charity CAFOD to support the building of a well in an African village and PKD UK (polysystic kidney disease) in support of local pair Liz Whitworth and Mark Holden. He received a transplant after Liz donated a kidney.

Steve said: “I hope by doing my trek I am inspiring the children to see what’s out there and help them learn more about the charities.

“By doing this fund-raising our school has raised £30,000 in the last five years and that’s a brilliant achievement.”
