Final farewell to United legend Jack
Date published: 12 July 2013
SCORES of famous footballing faces paid their respects to Jack Crompton — Manchester United’s oldest former player — who died earlier this month.
The 91 year old made his goalkeeping debut in 1946 and helped the Reds to FA Cup victory against Blackpool in 1948 and the league title four years later.
United legends Oldhamer Paul Scholes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Nicky Butt and former managers Tommy Docherty and Wilf McGuinness were among the mourners, as was former Oldham Athletic chief executive Alan Hardy. The service was at Fairfield Moravian Church in Droylsden.
Sheila, Jack’s wife of 34 years, requested donations in lieu of flowers to the Kingfisher Community Special School, Chadderton, which the couple have supported for many years.
Jack was present at the Foxdenton Lane school when Sir Alex Ferguson paid a visit to officially open the new Jack Crompton Suite, which formed part of a £2.5 million refurbishment.
He was also on hand to welcome Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who visited last month.
The proud grandad released his autobiography “From Goalline to Touchline” at the tender age of 86. The initial print run of 2,000 copies sold out immediately.
