Phew, what a show scorcher!

SOARING temperatures brought out the crowds in what organisers say was one of the best Saddleworth Summer Shows ever.

People flocked to the two-day event at Saddleworth School, Uppermill — and among the stars was six-times snooker world champion Steve Davis.

Other attractions included chainsaw wood carving, a circus show in a mini-big top and a falconry display.

The show is believed to have raised more than £20,000 to be split between Rotary charities and the Christie appeal.

Children’s fairground rides, charity and trade stalls, karts, morris dancers, brass bands and a dry stone walling display were the tip of the iceberg of attractions on the school playing fields.

Inside there were craft stalls and entertainment by Mossley’s Abney Youth Orchestra and young performers.

The show, organised by Saddleworth and Oldham Metro Rotary Clubs, moved to the school two years ago.

Show director Gordon Russell said: “It will definitely be one of the best shows ever.

“Our main attraction, Circus Sensible, has been thrilling children of all ages, as have all the main arena acts. We’re delighted with the number of people who supported them.”

When the chance came to play snooker legend Steve Davis at Saddleworth Show, I jumped at it, writes Karen Doherty.
I got a taste of the big time, as a massive crowd of, well, 30 people watched me take on the Nugget in aid of Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

I was one of many who played the six-times world champion, some of whom brought their own cues — and immediately missed the opening shot into the bottom right-hand pocket.

But incredibly, I managed to win! Though I strongly suspect Steve gave me every chance possible. It was odd how he missed certain shots and occasionally left the ball hanging tantalisingly over the pocket - including the frame-deciding black. He even gave me a leg-up to reach a tough shot.

Steve was at the show thanks to sponsor AWC Home Improvements and signed the pool table, which was raffled off.

“It’s been great fun,” said Steve. “Every now and again you come up against someone who has real talent.” Despite the result, I don’t think he was talking about me!
