MEMBERS of Oldham’s Youth Council met with MP Michael Meacher to discuss the need for an overhaul of citizenship education for young people
Mariam Waseem and Dylan McAughey, Oldham’s representatives in the UK Youth Parliament, met with the Labour MP and the principal of Oasis Academy, David Hayes, to ask for their support for the Curriculum for Life campaign, which hopes to change the way personal, social and health education (PSHE) is taught in schools.
The campaign argues that young people should be taught skills such as financial planning, sustainable living and cultural awareness.
Oasis Academy is the first academy to have pledged its support to the campaign with principal David Hayes signing the manifesto at the school.
Mr Meacher, MP for Oldham West and Royton, added: “I would like to congratulate Oasis Academy for pledging its support and taking a lead in this. I was never taught anything like this at school but I wish I had been.”
