Firms gear up for Tour de France

SADDLEWORTH and Oldham businesses are being urged to cash in at the start of a one-year countdown to the Tour de France’s visit to the region.
Next July 6, thousands will line the route to watch the world’s most spectacular cycle race as it passes through the Peak District National Park.
Day two will see top cyclists face one of their greatest challenges, on the long 1,719ft climb to Holme Moss as part of the York to Sheffield stage.
The Peak District National Park Authority, working with Welcome to Yorkshire, says local councils could benefit from a mini tourist boom.
Mark Turner of Pennine Prospects, said: “The race is taking place only a few miles from Saddleworth and there will be opportunities for businesses to benefit from the huge number of people who will visit.
“It’s a beautiful part of the world to explore, ride the actual route and watch the race itself. This will have a huge impact on the South Pennines and we want to make sure everyone benefits.”
When the tour last came to England in 2007, more than two million spectators turned out over two days.
Councillor Barabara Bealey, chair of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, has already held talks with Kirklees Council to discuss how they can promote the area.
