Hilda is all smiles at 100

A great-GRAN who once ran several successful Oldham businesses celebrates her 100th birthday today.

Hilda Barrott was born in Royton in 1913, and lived with her parents and six brothers and sisters.

She later married Fred and had a son, Peter and daughter, Sheila.

She ran a successful hairdressing salon in Shaw in 1940 before moving to Cornwall with Fred.

He died at the age of 52, and Hilda returned north to be close to her family, reapplying her business skills as manageress of Economy Shoe Stores in Oldham Market Hall until its destruction in the famous fire of 1974.

In retirement Hilda moved to Grasscroft, then Delph, where she became well known for her daily walks into the village. Finally, at 96, she moved into Avonleigh Gardens residential home.

She will celebrate her birthday there, surrounded by friends and family.
