Sapphire anniverary: Celia and Syd
THINGS didn’t exactly get off to the perfect start for devoted couple Celia and Syd Hodkin.
The day before their wedding Syd hurt his toe — and had to walk down the aisle in a slipper.
But on their honeymoon in Whitby Celia got in on the act too: she got badly sunburned and spent the rest of the holiday smothered in lotion.
Despite their initial hiccups the pair, who live off Moston Lane East, New Moston, today celebrate their 65th wedding anniversdary.
After meeting at Manchester’s Ritz dance hall, Syd was away on national service for a year. They married on his return.
Syd (92), from Failsworth and Celia (89), from Salford, settled in New Moston. They have three children and a grandchild.
Celia was a shorthand typist in Manchester before joining the staff at Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in Chadderton. Syd worked in the engineering department at Avro.
“I feel fortunate we’re still together,” said Celia.
