Trainee jobs scheme a ‘bold approach’

Young people are set to benefit from 200 trainee employment opportunities in the borough, Oldham’s council cabinet has confirmed

Members last night approved plans to launch the Oldham Young Trainee Programme, which will see those aged 16-24 and not sufficiently qualified to become apprentices, given a stepping stone to employment.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton said: “Creating 200 job opportunities will provide a step towards permanent employment for young unemployed people, and is something new and bold which could expand across the public sector and into the business base of Oldham.

“This is not just about creating jobs but up-skilling our workforce and giving young people the opportunity to get into sustained employment for the future.

“Councils don’t have to do this, but we believe it is the right thing to do.”



::The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) is to open offices in Oldham and has promised to employ local workers.

The investment was revealed at last night’s cabinet by Councillor Dave Hibbert, after AGMA was awarded a contract to undertake certain highways works
