£20m extra to get people on bikes

CYCLING in Greater Manchester is to get a £20 million boost as part of a national scheme to get more people on their bike.

The money, the largest award from the Government’s Cycle City Ambition Grant, follows a £50 million investment from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to improve transport options in the county.

TfGM is also leading the region’s cycling ambition and has set out a 12-year vision for the region.

The aim is to treble the number of people using bikes; the money will also mean the development of new “Cycle and Ride” stations, including one at the Hollinwood’s Metrolink stop.

A major new network of cycle routes to employment centres, schools and leisure facilities will also be introduced across Manchester.

Greater Manchester’s vision is for up to 10 per cent of all journeys to be made by bike by 2025
