Yanks for the memories

War-time fighting spirit revived for film tribute
SADDLEWORTH stepped back in time at the weekend as Uppermill was again transformed into its wartime self.

Military vehicles, 1940s dress and even a warplane flyover made it an event to remember, with brass bands providing a musical backdrop to streets packed with residents in fancy dress.

Saddleworth School became a hub of war-themed activity for three days as swing dance sessions, military memorabilia stalls and old-fashioned games took over the playing fields.

The event has been staged for the past 12 years, as a celebration of the local filming of Hollywood film “Yanks”, featuring Richard Gere in 1979.

Many locations across Uppermill and neighbouring Dobcross were used in the film, and locals take the opportunity every year to get into character and remember the momentous occasion.

American cars, a Spitfire and other Second World War engines after their daily parades through the village. And as day turned into night, music and dance classes with the Backstep Boogie Club provided an extra element of fun, while Sticky Wicket and his swing orchestra, along with top DJ Major Swing, made the Victory Swing Ball a huge success.

Yesterday, Oldham’s Mayor, Councillor John Hudson, hosted a coffee morning with the Normandy Veterans, while all eyes turned to the sky to witness a spectacular flyover from a C47 Dakota plane.

People travelled from far and wide to take part in the fun, including Paul and Val Cornish, from Bradford.

Dressed in military regalia, Paul said: “We come here every year, because we love the event and the whole area. The ambience during Yanks weekend is brilliant, and everyone is so friendly. We love getting involved in war time events.”

Val added: “It’s different every year, but we always have a great time. There are always different bits and bobs that make it great, and we meet up with old friends. It feels authentic, and like you’re actually in the war-time era.”

Organiser Paul Higginson said: “It’s been a fabulous weekend, it really has. The comments from people have all been excellent and show that they all like the different changes we have made. Everyone has said it’s been the best Yanks yet!
