ROCK Street Centre could be transformed into a new special school..
A NEW town centre special school for 140 children from across the borough has moved a step closer with £6.25 million from the Government.
The Department for Education has confirmed Oldham’s successful application for the money and the council is now looking for partner-sponsors to cover the rest of the costs.
The partner would run the new state-of-the-art school, which will cater for autistic children of all ages .
The preferred location is Rock Street in the town centre. The Chronicle understands the site is likely to be on council-owned land currently occupied by the Rock Street centre and grounds.
Expected to open in late 2015, the school will be the fourth dedicated Oldham special school — the others are Springbrook, Kingfisher and New Bridge, all rated “outstanding”. There are also four specialist units in mainstream schools.
Council chiefs are looking for a partner keen to bring community involvement, job opportunities for local people and voluntary group liaison in running the school.
Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, said: “This funding from the Government is fantastic news for local parents and families. We pride ourselves on having the right educational provisions - none more so than in our special schools. We’re looking forward to discussions with potential sponsors for this exciting project in the coming months.”
Interested partners can submit their outline vision for the school by August 22 at www.the-chest.org.uk/procontract/supplier.nsf/frm_home?ReadForm
