CANCER survivor Scott Weaver: “I wanted to give something back to the charity”
A teenage Oldham cancer survivor has set up an online financial advice centre for sufferers — with the charity that supported him through the illness.
Scott Weaver (19) has worked with young people’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent to launch the online platform. The site offers podcasts, factsheets and other contact information.
At 15, Scott - now studying ancient history at Manchester university - was diagnosed with a brain tumour. His family struggled to meet the costs associated with treatment and was awarded a grant by CLIC Sargent.
“Really unexpected costs pile up and my mum struggled to fund the travel, food and clothing costs,” sid Scott. “That’s why it was such a relief when CLIC Sargent stepped in.
“I wanted to give something back to the charity. Hopefully the podcasts and other information can help families like mine deal better with the financial impact of cancer.”
Cassie Davis, CLIC Sargent information manager, said: “This project has taken an awful lot of work but we’re delighted with the result.
“This is the first resource of its kind to provide accessible information about benefits and money management, specifically tailored to young people with cancer, and parents of children with cancer.
“It was great to have Scott help us out: his first-hand experience and knowledge were invaluable.”
