POLICE are trying to establish the identity of a man hit and killed by a train in Greenfield.

British Transport Police say the man was killed on a foot crossing a few hundred yards away from the train station at 7.35pm on Wednesday.

A spokesman said: “We are not treating the death as suspicious and are now in the process of getting a formal identification and preparing a report for the coroner.”

The man was struck by the 5.02pm Newcastle to Manchester Airport service.

The line was closed for 30 minutes.
