TIME for celebration at Oldham Academy North. Emar is far right on the second row back.
GCSE: STUDYING for GCSEs can be hard for any student - but Oldham Academy North pupil Emar Abdulghani first had to get to grips with a new language and way of life.
When Emar arrived from Afghanistan in 2011 he only knew a few words of broken English.
After two years of hard work the 16 year old is celebrating amazing GCSE results including three A*s, three As and three Bs.
“I am so happy with how I’ve done and it was challenging at times, especially learning the language while revising,” he said. “It’s fantastic to have done so well; I can’t believe it!”
Naeema Rahman also has high hopes for her future after receiving the school’s top grades overall, with 7A* and 2As.
Maths whizz kid Ryhan Mahmud (16) was proud to have passed an additional maths qualification, the equivalent of an AS-Level in the subject, on top of one A* and seven As.
Overall, 36 per cent of pupils achieved 5 or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, at the Broadway-based school.
Associate principal Martin Knowles said: “We are extremely proud of all our students and we are delighted with what they have achieved.
