One final push for Great North Run pair
Date published: 03 September 2013
A SON will push his mother around the Great North Run in memory of his father who died of meningitis last year.
Simon Brocklehurst’s dad, Derek, died aged 66 in Salford Hospital on February 22 after being rushed into Oldham Hospital just seven days earlier.
Now Mr Brocklehurst will push his mother, Valerie, who suffers with a bad hip, around the 13-mile course in a wheelchair to raise both money and awareness of the crippling effects the disease can have on old people as well as children.
The Great North Run, on Sunday September 15, has seen a huge surge in participants and last year’s event saw 55,000 competitors take part from over 100,000 applicants.
The course begins in Newcastle and runs over the Tyne Bridge before finishing in the coastal town of South Shields.
