Alexandra Park
OLDHAM’S biggest park has been officially recognised for its historic importance.
English Heritage has boosted Alexandra Park’s listed status on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England from Grade II to Grade II* — a first for an open space in Oldham.
Only 30 parks and gardens in the North-West have this distinguished accolade to their name.
The Victorian park was upgraded because it is a classic example of a municipal park retaining a large number of listed buildings and statues.
The heritage watchdog said the park’s design is “essentially unchanged” since it opened in 1865 as a job creation scheme.
IThe 23-hectare park will now enjoy national recognition for its importance in Oldham’s history and increased protection in the future.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for environment and housing, said: “Oldham Council is absolutely delighted to receive English Heritage recognition.”
