A POPULAR Co-operative food store has been sold off — just a week after another key retailer announced closure in the community.

Greenfield Co-operative food store in Chew Valley Road — believed to be 100 years old and the first Co-op in Saddleworth — is to change hands next month.

And the news was treated with surprise by locals who are still reeling over the closure of Spar on High Street, Uppermill.

A spokesman for The Co-operative Food said the shop had been sold as a freehold which does include the dentist. However, due to legal reasons, they would not disclose details of the independent retailer.

But she went on: “We can confirm we have sold our Co-operative Food store on Chew Valley Road to an independent retailer as a going concern.

“We have informed members of staff at the store of the sale.”

“All 12 members of staff will automatically transfer to the new operator, with their terms and conditions of employment maintained.

“The store’s last day of trading as a Co-operative Food store will be Tuesday, October 1 with the new operator taking over on Friday October 4.
